WNU DNA: Basics for Basics

What is a basic to you? For With Nothing Underneath, it is the perfect everyday shirt.

Our company was founded with the aim to provide its customers with stylish basics from a company who cares, ensuring that not only was every product sold 100% organic but also that every part of our process, from sourcing fabrics to sending shirts out to customers, was fully ethical. This way, WNU can promise to bring the best basics to your wardrobes.

But not everyone’s ‘basic’ is a classic shirt.

For women and girls all over the UK, their daily life is hugely affected by period poverty.

Due to their expensive nature, sanitary products are one of the first products people will go without when money is tight.

 Plan UK, 2010

WNU was created to make the perfect boyfriend shirt, but as a business, we wanted to be more than just a product. A promise from our founder has ensured that using our platform to support and raise awareness for charities has become an integral part of our brand, and that is exactly what would like to do now, which is why we have become an official partner with The Hygiene Bank Wandsworth.

The Hygiene Bank is a grassroots charity, grounded in community – they give people access to the basics they need. Two years ago, it was estimated that nearly 80,000 16-24 year old women in London had experienced period poverty (YouGov Plc, 2018) and whilst the charity has 756 drop off locations up and down the country in the UK, this is why we wanted to help closer to home.

You can find your local branch by checking on their website here.

As an initial donation, we partnered with DAME, the UK based sustainable period product company whose products are 100% plastic free. To find a company with such like-minded values was a no brainer for us and we have gone on to buy £500 worth of their tampons, which are made from 100% certified organic cotton (just like our shirts!). It’s not always clear to see where donations go, so we have broken it down for you for full transparency…

However, we wanted to do more - which is where we asked for your help.

Of a recent order for a community partner of THB’s, a third of the money spent was on period products. The demand for sanitary products is still sky-high, which is why WNU launched our ‘Basics for Basics’ initiative.

For every Poplin White, Poplin Steel Blue or Poplin Pink shirt bought between 11th June and 11th July, 50% of the profits were donated to The Hygiene Bank to help buy even more products to help women and girls in our local area. As a result of this campaign we were able to donate £2875.86 to THB Wandsworth, which went towards 3000 tampons from DAME, 6720 sanitary towels from Grace & Green and a further £400 directly to THB Wandsworth.

It’s as simple as that. The perfect basic for you, an essential basic for someone else.

But there’s more ways you can help too!

You can donate directly to THB Wandsworth’s Just Giving page by clicking here.

Or you can donate through us, as WNU is proud to announce that we are an official Drop Off point based in South West London for THB; so if you are in the area, please feel free to donate sanitary products to us.

Any donation, big or small, will be greatly accepted. These products will then be given to women and girls in the area who need them.
